I consider my MacbookPro an investment, but an investment in my sanity and mood when trying to use my computer. And performance doesn't dip on battery power like EVERY one of my Windows laptops did. Battery life: amazing, Screen: fantastic, keyboard: wonderful, trackpad: best in class, performance: amazing, better than my custom built Windows gaming PC that on paper should have better specs. It's the only computer that I have ever owned that I haven't found a thing to complain about. I ended up splurging and buying an M1 Macbook Pro Max when they were released and it was a bit eye opening. And after searching online, it's apparently common with the version that I bought. If you don't hit the keys dead center, they only register about 30% of the time. The keyboard is one of the worst laptop keyboards I've ever used. And, It had things about it that weren't really defective but annoyed the living hell out of me, like the keyboard. It was one of the highest rated and best selling laptops on Amazon. My most recent Windows laptop was an Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop that I paid $1500 for.
I've spent anywhere from $800 to $1700 before on laptops and never quite got something I was completely happy with.
Each one of them had something that annoyed me, whether it was performance or battery life or screen quality/size. I have a graveyard of dead Windows laptops in my garage that I have retired over the years. Now Mac is my preferred platform for my work and I understand better why the graybeards in my field were already there. Most of the team I was going to be joining were using MacOS, so I also went with a Mac (2020 iMac 27 inch at the time) just so there would be less friction with onboarding and using the same tools. When I changed jobs about 2 years ago I got a remote gig and had the option of buying my own work computer with company tech allowance funds. I used Ubuntu exclusively for a little while when I was in Grad School for Computer Science, but never really touched a Mac for any significant period of time. I was a devout Windows/PC user, starting with Win 3.1.
